Elk Falls Cemetery

History buffs will find much of interest here. In addition to the graves of Prudence Crandall and her brother Hezekiah, several Union Soldiers, one Confederate soldier and one of America’s first women mayors, America I. King, are buried here.

It is believed that the cemetery was started before Elk Falls became a town when a party of soldiers of the famous Black Cavalry known as the Buffalo Soldiers were encamped there. Several fell ill and died, possibly of cholera, and were buried on the spot. In the northwest corner of the cemetery are simple markers inscribed, A Soldier.
