Towanda Area Historical Museum

Established in 1999, the Towanda Area Historical Museum is housed in the Historic Masonic Lodge Building, which was constructed in 1904. We are dedicated to the care and preservation of the culture and history of the greater Towanda, Kansas area.

The museum has pioneer relics and collections from early settlers and special collections from other museums, along with over 400 unique Towanda related photographs available for copies.

Also in developement is a new genealogy section for your ancestry research!! We have a microfilm viewer with a printer and several rolls of old local newspaper microfilm. We also have the means to receive on short term loan microfilm from the national archives and other resources. Stop by and check us out! Hours are listed below, or by special appointment.

Cassoday Museum

Housed in the original Santa Fe Depot, this museum features an old-timer cowboy room and a variety of artifacts from Cassoday’s past when nearly one million cattle were shiped by railroad from this Flint Hills town.

Vickers Oil Refinery

The Vickers first refinery was built in Potwin in 1915. During the first half of the twentieth century, Potwin enjoyed the prosperity of the Vickers Oil refinery. Commencing with a lease on the Parris Farm 10 miles north of Potwin, production reached 16,000 barrels a day during the late 50’s. In 1964, distressed economic conditions shut down the oil processing facilities. The company was sold to Swift & Company and the remaining operations were closed in 1970 – marking an end to an era of prosperity.

Old Bank

The 1904 limestone building was originally built for Potwin’s first bank. It is still in use as a public library.

Community House and Park

Built in 1917 with the help of every man in town, the Community House is the center of social events. Located on the property to the north is a park with picnic facilities.

Frederick Remington Ranch

This is the Homestead of the famous western artist, Frederick Remington. Large tours available.
