Hodgeman State Lake & Wildlife Area

Hodgeman State Lake & Wildlife Area is located 4 miles east of Jetmore on Highway 156, then 2 miles south. The State Lake measures 87 acres, which are periodically dry. When water is present the lake is stocked. The Wildlife Area encompasses 254 acres. Camping is allowed and boat ramps are provided.rn

Buckner Valley Park

Buckner Valley Park is located five and one-half miles west of Jetmore on Buckner Creek. The original dam site on the Buckner Creek was built through the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Due to floods in recent years, the stones have been overlaid with cement. The Buckner Valley Park remains a popular place for picnics, camping, fishing, and horseback riding. Electricity and water are available. Permission to ride beyond the lake land on private property should be acquired from landowners. Interesting riding can extend to horse thief canyon which is about three miles away. rn

Jetmore City Lake

Jetmore City Lake, three miles west and one and one-half south of Jetmore, is located on Spring Creek. The lake is popular for camping, fishing, bird watching, boating, water skiing, beach volleyball, swimming and hiking. Rolling grassland surrounds the area with the bluffs in the background.

Full camping services are available with a pit dump at the entrance of the lake and water and restrooms. Electrical hookups are available at five of the fifteen campsites. Permits are required at the entrance.rn

Fort Hays-Fort Dodge Road

The Fort Hays-Fort Dodge Road is an interesting trail crossing the eastern part of Hodgeman County. The road was used to haul freight from the rail head to connect to the Santa Fe Trail, Fort Dodge and the New Mexico. The Duncan’s Crossing marker is found on the Pawnee Creek seven miles north and three miles east of Hanston. The original “cut” in the creek bank is visible today. Other ruts are visible three and one-half miles west of Hanston on US 156 just to the north. The Warner Ranch Sawlog Marker is located along the county line eleven miles south of Jetmore on US 283 and one and one-half miles east.rn

Point of Rocks Prairie Landmark

The Point of Rocks landmark is located eight miles south of Jetmore on US 283, 6.75 miles east and 1.5 miles north. Before the settlement of the area, the ‘point of rocks’ would act as a guiding landmark helping people to find their way, since it could be seen for miles. In the early days it was a favorite picnic, recreation area for community groups, schools and churches.rn

The ‘point of rocks’ mural is an interesting stop along Jetmore Main Street. It depicts early day farm life along the Sawlog Creek in southern Hodgeman County.

Haun Museum

The Haun Museum is located in the first house on the townsite of Jetmore. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was built in 1879, by T.S. Haun, the founder of Jetmore, then called Buckner. Mr. Haun edited the first newspaper in Jetmore, The Buckner Independent, in the west room of the upstairs in 1879. The ground floor was the residence of the Haun family. Early in 1881 the county offices were housed in the east room upstairs in the house. On the 24 of March, 1891, the first child was born on the Jetmore Townsite in this house, Margarite Pauline, daughter of Elizabeth and T.S. Haun. Travelers would stop by the house for food and lodging. It also served as a community center.

Visitors are given a glimpse of daily life of the early County settlers, as they view an office, a dining room, a kitchen, a bedroom and a parlor, complete with furnishings of the era. Mannequins in period dress add to the authenticity. There are also displays of adult and children\\\’s clothing, tools used by farmers and craftsmen, and a postal station.

There is something of interest for visitors of all ages as they enjoy taking a trip through the past, sharing the articles and scenes of the people of early-day Hodgeman County.

The Haun Museum also has displays representing life after the pioneer period and into the 1920s and 1930s. Displays of American involvment in wars from the Revolutionary through World War II and Vietnam. A sample Service Station from the 1960s is present as is a printing press used by the Jetmore Republican in past years. Since the Rail Road was removed from Jetmore, there has been a display constructed in the yard behind the museum building.

The museum has building a reproduction of the interior of a One-Room-School-House where a teacher is waiting for her students with books and lunch pails on the desks. In the year 1998, a metal building was added in the lot behind the museum which now houses antique farm and fire equipment, a 1950\\\’s service station with a 1949 Plymouth 4 door auto, a stone post display and a horse drawn buggy.

The museum is ever changing and growing with new displays being created to represent their time period.
