The Wayland home was built in 1887, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It was built by the Higgie family who used only the finest lumber for the home. In 1896, a Socialist, J.S. Wayland, and the founder and editor of the Appeal To Reason purchased the home and he and his family lived there for 20 years.
